I'm still in research phase, but I know you will offer your insight, tips and opinions to further my quest. So here I am, exposed. I need help. What is it that you use to take those amazing pictures? What kind of editing software do you love?

Canon, Nikon? I still don't know. I have the Canon 30D and love it and also use Photoshop CS3 for editing. I have my go to lens 85 1.8 that I love for portraits and am saving my pennies for the 24-70mm. Someday...

It's an expensive hobby to get into...darn it!

Head on over to dpreview.com: awesome reviews, the sites takes photos with all cameras so you can see the quality, you can do side-by-side comparisons, etc.

We have a Nikon D50 and loooove it. I can't say anything bad about Canon though. My first SLR camera was my grandpa's old Nikon so I'm biased.

Good lenses make all the difference. A few friends of mine got some great lessons for their cameras (one a Canon, the other a Nikon) and their pictures are GORGEOUS. So really consider investing in some good lenses. It's on our wish list.

We use Photoshop CS3 for everything. And I love the iLife suite on my MacBook Pro.

Good luck!

Canon 40D. Hands down. There isn't much that it won't do, compared to a 50D, and it's much less expensive. Are you using it for professional pics? A hobby? Both?

And my advice if you buy a Canon, that you stick with Canon lenses, flashes, battery packs, etc.

Get yourself photoshop. (I STILL don't have it...). The Canon comes with an editing program, and I use it, but I don't love it. In fact, it bugs me, but it's all I have right now.

We are on the verge of purchasing a new lens (50mm), and either more memory for this old dinosaur, or just splurging and getting a mac.

We bought the 40D at Costco, as a kit, with a 2gig CF card (get a couple of them), and the 28-135mm lens. I like the lens, but often find myself wishing I had something smaller. And larger.

Like Michelle said, invest in good lenses. It's all in the lens.

Have FUN researching! Just know this, that when you finally do purchase the camera, and you think, "great, now we've got everything we need....", that it's just a big lie. ;) Things have a tendency to snowball.....and many more "must haves" end up on the list.

Wish someone would have told me that. ;)
